The Darwin Building was fully refurbished to provide modern, dynamic, flexible facilities perfectly appointed for biotechnology, pharmaceutical and technology R&D companies of all sizes, including 10 x 1800mm wide Mach-Aire CLASSIC Style Fume Cupboards and shared extract systems.

Challenges

The client required the supply and installation of fume cupboards and complete fume extract systems to serve multiple fully fitted R&D suites across three floors with future flexibility. There were multiple large scale redundant discharge stacks from the previous installation, installed within specially built towers extending from the roof.

Solutions

Mach-Aire was appointed to deliver a combined work package, including the Fume Cupboards and Fume Extract systems to ensure good co-ordination throughout, from manufacture through to on-site commissioning, giving Capri Mechanical Services one point of contact and complete peace of mind.

A bespoke lifting plan and installation sequence was devised to safely remove the redundant discharge stacks, before installing the small stacks in their place. The Fume Cupboards are equipped with mechanical service blanks and sleek dual purpose low-level storage cabinets, including ventilation and internal power sockets for future requirements.

As with many projects Mach-Aire was engaged at tender stage to assist with the design development, including air flow calculations, duct sizing and controls strategy proposed for the scheme.

Results

Chesterford Research Park has provided laboratory and office space for biotechnology, pharmaceutical and technology companies for more than 60 years, near Cambridge. The fume cupboards and extraction system give the facility the safety-critical containment its research operations depend on. The project highlights the benefits of using a single source provider for fume cupboards and extract systems, with the reassurance of an experienced company that can offer ongoing design support.
